MISSIONARY SISTERS OF OUR LADY OF PILAR MSP
(Pilar Sisters)

The members of the Society of the Missionaries of St. Francis Xavier commonly known as Society of Pilar, who worked in the missions felt a strong need of having Sisters to help them in their Missionary Apostolate. This need was officially expressed and deliberated upon at the Xth General Chapter of the Society of Pilar, held in 1977, which decided to have a Sister Institute with an identical charism, to collaborate and complement their Missionary Apostolate.

This inspiration of the Xth General Chapter of the Society of Pilar was realised in the first members of the Association: Joanita Miranda, Theodolinda Fernandes, Nina Lopes, Julie Aruj and Sylvia Fernandes, on 8th September 1988. The Statutes of the Association of Pilar Sisters was provisionally approved on 10th August 1988 for three years by Archbishop Raul Gonsalves and definitively approved in the year 1991 in view of being erected as a Society of Apostolic Life in the near future.

Later in the year 2007, the Statutes were revised and approved by His Excellency Archbishop Patriarch Filipe Neri Ferrao.

In 2017, Archbishop Patriarch Filipe Neri Ferrao, having received the Nihil Obstat from the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, approved the new Constitutions of the Society and canonically erected the Association of Pilar Sisters into a Society of Apostolic Life of Diocesan Right, under the name of “Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Pilar”.
On May 13, 2017, at a solemn Eucharistic celebration held at the Saviour of the World Church, Loutulim, of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, Sr. Izabel De Souza was inducted as the first Superior General of the newly erected Society of Apostolic Life and made her Definitive Commitment into the Society before the Archbishop. Later, the other members also made their Definitive/Temporary Commitment before the Superior General and all were formally incorporated into the new Society of Apostolic Life.
